Curb appeal update

July 12, 2011 by Erin Heaton

Progress
An update on my curb appeal to-do list… things are moving right along.

After many weekends, the porch surface repair is done and awaiting finishing touches. You’ll notice the railing was removed to work on the porch. Having it gone gives a nice open feeling to the porch, but we are probably obligated to put it back up by code. And I guess it keeps anyone from taking a running leap off the porch.

I repainted the mailbox, but the shade of red is looking a bit too ketchupy for me. I’ve decided I’m going to get rid of the red as an accent color altogether though, so that will soon be corrected.

I also added one more item to the list. The paint on the trim around the front door has started peeling, so that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Always playing catch up with this house.

Before

Short term plans

  • Repair porch surface
  • Replace porch steps
  • Update porch railing
  • Refinish front door
  • Paint or otherwise address kick plate so it matches other door hardware
  • Repaint trim around front door
  • Repaint mailbox (faded)
  • Repaint basement windows
  • Address rusty electric meter box and other utility boxes

Long term projects

  • Tear out and replace walkways
  • Figure out what to do about useless garage door
  • Replace shingling on sides of dormers with siding or another solution
  • Repaint trim
  • Replace roof (holding out as long as possible, of course)
