Curb appeal to-do list

June 7, 2011 by Erin Heaton

Maybe I’ve just been watching too much Curb Appeal, but I thought it was about time I came up with a plan for the exterior of our house. Nothing complicated, just a list gathering up all the small projects we’ve been doing and planning to help me see the bigger picture.

Some projects are imminent or underway, while others will probably happen over the course of a few years.

Short term plans

  • Repair porch surface (underway)
  • Replace porch steps (complete!)
  • Update porch railing
  • Refinish front door
  • Paint or otherwise address kick plate so it matches other door hardware
  • Repaint mailbox (faded)
  • Repaint basement windows
  • Address rusty electric meter box and other utility boxes

Long term projects

  • Tear out and replace walkways
  • Figure out what to do about useless garage door
  • Replace shingling on sides of dormers with siding or another solution
  • Repaint trim
  • Replace roof (holding out as long as possible, of course)

Many of these projects are more functional than fun, but I guess this is the price I pay for my charming fireplace and arched front door.

Stay tuned! I’m hoping to knock out the short term list in the next couple of months.

p.s. While the landscaping could also use some work, I’m excluding it from this list entirely and focusing solely on the house and hardscape itself.

Best wishes with it all! After my weekend of hauling rocks around the yard, I’m ready to focus on the actual house too–trim paint: here I come!

Thanks, I’m not sure how much fun any of it will be, but someone’s gotta do it!
