Giving old frames some personality with wood appliques

May 4, 2010 by Erin Heaton

I found these wood appliques on the clearance rack at Michael’s, but I imagine they have them at most hardware and craft stores.

After I bought them, I actually had a rare moment of buyer’s remorse. (Yes, buyer’s remorse over $1.49.) What the heck was I going to do with these? They were too small to use on furniture, even if I had a piece of furniture to use them on.
But then I remembered I had these picture frames with art from an old apartment. I was following a trend to paint picture frames the same color as the wall. That trend never really caught on, did it?
The appliques fit perfectly on the frames. I had no guilt about getting rid of the artwork I had made years ago, so in the trash it went.
I used hot glue to adhere the appliques on the frames.

Then I gave them a couple of coats of black acrylic paint. I was going to make some new artwork, but I was having a hard time coming up an idea for something that was flat enough to fit in the frames. So I put in some new photos instead.

What an easy way to dress up a plain frame… I always wondered what people did with those things.

Great way to update plain frames. Actually, IKEA has some really cheeeeeap frames that could be made nicer this way…

Now I see your painted Polynesian dishes…gotta go look. I see those in every thrift store I got to.
