Why you shouldn’t paint over wall paper…

February 23, 2012 by Erin Heaton

Because many years from now, when the wall has been painted over a dozen times, the paint will start cracking and someone will turn around and find their child peeling chunks of wall off the wall.

Hello fake wood grain wallpaper.

The rest of the wall is still intact, and this spot is fairly inconspicuous down by the baseboard, so for now, I am not fixing this. Instead I am going to be “fixing” this, probably by regluing this large paint chip back on the wall and then painting over it.

Someday when I’ve run out of projects and have nothing better to do, maybe I’ll tackle repairing these walls the right way. You know, because that just sounds like so much fun.

Stupid old house. I love you, but you are definitely stupid.

Yeah, I’m sort of turning a blind eye to the problem until it becomes worse. That’s a total thankless repair job.

Off to go check out your post now!

Oh Erin…I should send you things to post from our house, too…like the plaster over the paneling in the kitchen that has all started bubbling away from the wall or cracking all the way across the wall…etc…you can entitle is ‘The Joy? of Older Homes’, lol

Ugh…old houses! Why do people do this stuff?

I’m starting to notice plaster cracks in random places too. So much fun!

“Stupid old house. I love you, but you are definitely stupid.”

I think my husband says the same thing to our house everyday. Old house plus years and years of sloppy DIY before us.

That’s funny. Maybe all old home owners feel this way!

I am familiar with the sloppy DIY. We have a mixture of good, bad and weird DIY in this house. Of course, most are things that we just didn’t notice until we’d lived here quite a while.

Hi, I'm Erin Heaton,

Lots and lots of things.
