How to make a fake gold record

March 31, 2010 by Erin Heaton

This is another project I made for a gift. My brother is a musician and what musician wouldn’t enjoy a gold record on their wall (even if it is fake)?

I started with a record I found in the basement. Duran Duran anyone? Somehow this one was in perfect condition. I’ve decided if I ever need to hear “The Reflex” again, I will just download it.

I gave it about three or four coats of gold paint. And sprayed it with a coat of clear sealer.

Instead of making up a fake artist and song info for the record label, I opted to forgo text altogether. I did up a little design using a dingbat font called SL Square Ornaments and printed it out on photo paper. (I actually printed two black and red, but decided to use the red one.) Then I used spray adhesive to glue it on the record.

Last, I popped it into an LP album frame bought on sale with some scrapbook paper for a background. That’s gold, Jerry! Gold!

dave is broken-hearted you sacrificed this record…”it’s in perfect condition!” he said incredulously. though later he added “it’s not their best.” the project looks cool, though.

Sorry, Dave. I bought it like 10 years ago for a quarter and never listened to it. The reverse side is still unpainted, so I guess Adam could listen to that if he wanted.

Hi, I'm Erin Heaton,
