Buffet & bookcase: Living room furniture additions

June 2, 2014 by Erin Heaton

Painted black bookcase

It’s been quite a while since I did anything with the decor in our living room. I’m itching to change the wall color and to switch out the curtains, but upending a room that is functioning just fine doesn’t even make the bottom of the priority list around here right now.

But we did manage to swap out a couple of undersized pieces of furniture for (slightly) larger versions.

Painted black bookcase

I had finally had it with the books in the console table situation (that was supposed to be temporary), so after inheriting a simple bookcase from Dan’s grandpa, we were able to get most of the books in one location. Huzzah!

Wooden bookcase before

I freshened up the bookcase with a few coats of black latex enamel and added a thin plywood back. It’s not fine furniture, but I don’t think we own any “fine furniture” as it is.

On the other side of the room, the previous console table was not the right size to hold the space and had little to offer in the ways of storage, so I went on the hunt for something more substantial.

Antique buffet found at antique mall

After minimal searching, I came across this piece at an antique mall. The dimensions were pretty much perfect, and I liked the details. I fought my tendencies to keep searching for some other perfect piece that likely doesn’t exist and snatched it up.

The tag said it was from the 1940s, but I am not knowledgeable enough to know if that’s true or not. What I do know, is that it is solid wood and built to last. The price was $225, but I ended up getting 10% off by asking for a discount. $200+ still seemed a bit high for a used piece with nicks and chips, but it’s less than half the price of a piece I was eyeing online. And that wasn’t even real wood.

It’s got an unusual two-tone thing going on that I don’t quite understand, but it works in our mismatchy house.

What’s even more unusual, is that I have somehow managed to not fill it up so far! I stashed a few things that didn’t have a home (like photo albums), but it’s nice to have some empty space.

Pay no attention to my lackluster styling. I’m feeling uninspired by all of the accessories around here. #decoratorproblems
