No cost closet organization

May 13, 2010 by Erin Heaton

Elise’s closet had devolved into a giant heaping mess. Stuffed with diapers, outgrown clothes and unneeded newborn supplies. I can’t believe I’m going to show you this “before” picture. It was really that bad.
Before
There was no structure in the bottom of the closet and things were just falling all over.
Before
The shelves above the rod were not much better.
I relocated the diaper stockpile under the crib and decluttered. A lot. Gone are the too-small clothes and receiving blankets. I repurposed a metal shelving unit from the basement and it fit perfectly. I also used a couple of bins that were previously in our bathroom closet before I organized it.
This is nothing revolutionary, but it’s definitely my favorite part of the re-organization. I didn’t have a home for Elise’s shoes before and they were always in our living room, on our console table, on the dining room table and occasionally ended up in the toy bin. Now they have a place of their own!
There’s almost too much space! Well, not really. But look at how much room there is. Room for toys!

I am brand spankin’ new to your blog. And I love it! Your ingenuity, thrift, and fearless DIY attitude are a little rush for me! Makes me wat to hop off this computer and dig in. And I love, love that you showed a real life disorganized picture. You didn’t spend the big bucks, you just fixed it- and that’s the kind of stuff that’s truly inspring.

Aw, thanks! Most times I don’t fix things until they get super crazy like the before photo above. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad!

I need to revisit her closet actually. There’s a whole new group of outgrown clothes to deal with. Thanks for the reminder!

Oh, hmmm, I just looked at your “about me” post and you *don’t* live in Lansdowne. Oops! But I have to say that the photo above showing the closet and the nook area with the window looks *exactly* like my daughter’s room!

Haha, yeah, we don’t live in Lansdowne, PA (I guess?). That’s funny. Her room has symmetrical closets on either side of a little nook. That tiny room has four doors and three windows in it! It’s crazy!

      More of her bedroom here!
