Transit pass artwork

August 20, 2010 by Erin Heaton

Since 2003, either Dan or I (and for a few years, both of us) have commuted to work on St. Louis’ Metro light rail system. We’re big fans of public transportation for environmental reasons, but riding a train isn’t always glamorous. Actually, it’s never glamorous. And a lot of times, it’s pretty annoying (enduring bad weather, long travel times, crazies).

I started saving our monthly passes several years ago and had amassed quite a fat stack. I wanted to do something with them to commemorate all those long commutes, so I decided to make a piece of artwork for our basement office.
I found a piece of thin, but rigid plastic in my stash to use for a backing. It’s the same kind of plastic they use for notebook covers, but a little thicker. Who knows where that came from.
I cut a small hole in it so I could hang it on the wall.
Then I tacked down all of the passes in a shingle-like manner so all the colorful parts were visible. I wanted a design that we could add to as we accumulate more passes.
Not really living room-worthy artwork, but it does bring a bit of color to the drab walls of the office.
