A couple of antique mall finds

March 9, 2011 by Erin Heaton

I scored on a recent trip to my favorite antique mall (and it’s somewhat inferior neighbor). I’ll show you my greatest find in another post soon, but these two are just as interesting.

I was almost out the door when I spotted this unusually shaped stained glass window. I’m not sure if it was from a house or what, but the colors and even the tone of the wood frame are going to fit my living room perfectly.

It was $35; I thought that was a fair price and a fantastic birthday gift to myself! Especially because there’s no chippy lead paint to contend with like on so many antique windows.

I also found this small iron dog, who totally took advantage of my weakness for animal figurines. It’s in too good of condition to be very old (I think), but for $4, I don’t really care.

Love the window! Where’s this great antique mall? Totally trying to find a small inexpensive table for a bedroom.

Thanks, Jenny! The antique mall I like is in St. Louis (where I live). I’m not sure where you’re from, but there’s bound to be some type of antique/junk stores around. They are a little more expensive than thrift stores/yard sales/estate sales/craigslist, but the selection is much better and easier to find things. And I also appreciate the convenience factor. (They have regular store hours, so I can drop in when I have time. They will usually hold purchases for like a week while you can arrange pick up.)

I am also in St. Louis (Webster Groves area). I’ve been to Rothschild Antiques but it tends to be somewhat pricey. I’ll have to make a day of it and hit the other spots.

Jenny, I live in Shrewsbury! Crazy.

I’ve never been to Rothschild… where’s that? My favorite is Treasure Aisles in Richmond Heights on Big Bend. I usually go to the one right next door (Big Bend Antiques or something like that) while I’m at it since they share a parking lot. Treasures Aisles has some junk, but I’ve found a lot of good pieces there for really cheap.

Kenrick (on Watson in Affton) is also not expensive.

Since you’re looking for furniture, I would also recommend going to the Miriam Switching Post just down Big Bend a little further. Their prices are very very reasonable and they have quality stuff.

Awesome thanks! I had both of the Richmond Heights ones on my list. Rothschild is in Central West End – kind of pricey but they had tons of cute old school desks for pretty cheap (around $20 or below) and I think that when my son is older, I’ll paint one some funky colors and give him a cool homework space.
