Antique mall finds: artwork for the living room and family room

May 19, 2011 by Erin Heaton

I have been stalking this screen print for about six months, checking on each visit to see if it was still there. I love the cartoony barbershop quartet, the bright colors and the fact that it’s printed on an old player piano scroll. The frame is a little banged up, but otherwise it’s in good condition. The frame is approximately 16″ x 21″, if that gives you any indication of size.
When I first spotted it, it was $65 and I couldn’t justify spending that, even on an original piece. But on my latest trip, it had been marked down to $35 so I finally caved.

I tried googling for info on the artist, Kenneth Reeve. It seems as though he’s fairly well known, especially in Indiana. His work pops up for sale on art sites, but most everything that came up were etchings and landscapes. They look nothing like this work. Screen prints of his that I was able to find are mostly of birds. Dead end.
I hung it in the living room. The H monogram is migrating to the family room. It looks better in there anyway.

The next one is a much smaller print of a deer family in a 6″ x 8″ frame I found for $3.75. It’s just a postcard or something like that, but it’s gold foil and it changes with the light like a hologram.

You can’t really see that in photos, but it’s strange. And I liked the green frame.

The last piece I found is a plaster wall plaque with a pair of gold seahorses for $3. It’s a small 6 inches in diameter, but it’s thick and weighty. It’s going to go well in the family room once I get my act together about the artwork in there.
