Framed children’s artwork

November 10, 2011 by Erin Heaton

Elise made this painting at school. It’s just cheap thin paper and tempera paint, but I love it. So expressive!

I picked up this large 12×16 inch frame at Jo-Ann Fabrics for about $12 (on sale/with coupon). So after writing her name and the date on the back of the painting, I framed it up.

But this isn’t just a plain frame. It’s a specialty frame made for kid artwork that has a frame in the front and a storage compartment for extra artwork in the back. This particular one features plexi-glass (not real glass). Not what I would normally choose, but I didn’t realize it was plexi until after I had it at home and unwrapped. (I have also seen a similar kid artwork frame at Target for a bit more, but don’t know if that’s glass or plexi-glass.)

Plexi or not, it looks pretty good, and Elise proudly comments a lot about her painting on display.

One tip: if you’re looking for a way to incorporate kid art into your decor without it turning into a kindergarten classroom, I have three words for you: restrained color palette. If you have the kids stick to one color or a limited set of colors (and avoid combining all the primary colors together), you’ll end up with something that looks a bit more sophisticated.
